Volo man pleads guilty to lesser charge in overdose death

A Volo man faces up to seven years in prison after admitting Tuesday he took part in a drug deal that led to the death of a 19-year-old Lake Zurich woman.

Sean Campbell, 22, is also eligible for probation after pleading guilty to delivery of a controlled substance in Lake County Circuit Court.

Assistant State's Attorney Scott Hoffert said Campbell, of the 100 block of Terra Firma Lane, agreed to drive Kelly Gawron and another man to Chicago on Dec. 4 so Gawron could buy some heroin.

Hoffert said that once the group made contact with the dealer, Gawron paid for the heroin with her money and the dealer handed four capsules full of the drug to Campbell.

Campbell then handed two capsules to Gawron, Hoffert said, and she inhaled the contents of one while still in the car with Campbell and the other man.

Hoffert said police believe Gawron inhaled the contents of the second capsule after she arrived home, and her father found her unresponsive in her bedroom about 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 5.

Hoffert agreed to drop a more serious charge of drug-induced homicide in exchange for Campbell's guilty plea.

Circuit Judge Fred Foreman scheduled a sentencing hearing for Nov. 17.
