• Elk Grove resident Robert Holzheimer, a student at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, was the recipient of a 2009 Global Automotive Aftermarket Symposium (GAAS) Scholarship funded by the University of the Aftermarket.

GAAS is an annual symposium whre the automotive aftermarket industry comes together to hear top industry figures present their point of view about the trends taking place now and in the next five years.

GAAS scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, were awarded to 65 students in 2009. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled full-time in a college-level program or National Automotive Technician Education Foundation certified automotive technical program.

• The following Buffalo Grove High School seniors were named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program: Steve Chacko, Laura Chicoine,Katherine Lazzara, Andrew Ly and Paulina Mateja of Arlington Heights; and Erica Chan and Ryan McGonagle of Buffalo Grove. A Letter of Commendation from Buffalo Grove High School and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be presented to these students.

• Econ Illinois and the Illinois Council on Economic Education named Rev. Daniel Hall one of 3M's "Stars in the Classroom." Father Hall serves as chairman of the Social Studies department at St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights, and moonlights as an assistant coach on the varsity football team. He will receive his award at the Illinois Economic Education Day Luncheon taking place Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the Union League Club of Chicago.

• Simon Zielinski, a 2009 Buffalo Grove High School graduate, and Emily Gruendel, a 2009 Prospect High School graduate, were among the 235 college freshmen from throughout the country awarded a Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full housing and tuition college scholarship.

Evans Scholars are golf caddies who are selected on the basis of four criteria: a strong caddie record, excellence in academics, financial need and outstanding character.

Zielinski attends Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., while Gruendel attends the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

• Joining Executive Service Corps of Chicago (ESC) as a volunteer consultant to nonprofit organizations and public agencies in the Chicago region are Sherry Brownstein of Palatine and Janice Hand of Lincolnshire.

Brownstein joins ESC after 22 years with the American Cancer Society, most recently serving as director of field operations for the Illinois division. Continuously active in her community, Brownstein has served on the boards of the Great Books Foundation, the North Suburban Library System, the Glencoe Plan Commission, and on the board and as a trustee for the Glencoe Public Library. She currently volunteers with Friends of the Palatine Library and the Great Books Foundation.

Hand joins ESC having retired in 2008, after almost 25 years with Hewitt Associates, where she was most recently senior consultant and formerly consultant, unit manager and partner. Also active in her community, Hand currently serves as president of Friends of the Vernon Area Public Library, secretary of Friends of Ryerson Woods, and as a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lincolnshire Garden Club.

In joining ESC, these individuals join a consultant corps of over 270 volunteers who offer the expertise, skills and knowledge developed through long-time leadership careers to equip nonprofits and public agencies with insights and guidance to provide the best in programs and services for the constituents they serve.
