Bears ban big purses, bags at Soldier Field

No man bags at Soldier Field - or fanny packs for that matter.

At least not big ones.

The long list of items not allowed at Bears games just got considerably longer, with a new ban taking effect Sunday against large purses and bags.

Bears spokesman Scott Hagel said the new rules, which will go into effect for Sunday's game against the Lions, come after recommendations from the NFL. He said there is no specific known threat to Soldier Field.

"We thought it was a prudent move to make sure that we create the safest environment," Hagel said. "We obviously understand there is a level of inconvenience."

Those attempting to bring in items on the new banned list will be turned away at the gate.

The Bears have been ratcheting up security since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to include pat downs of every attendee, bag inspections and an ever growing list of barred items.

Here are the latest additions to the list:

Not Allowed:

• Any size backpack

• Fanny packs

• Duffel bags

• Purses larger than 12" X 12" X 12"

• Non-fitting, oversized camera cases

• All other types of bags, regardless of size

Allowed after inspection:

• Purses smaller than 12" X 12" X 12"

• Diaper bags (with related items)

• Medical bags

• Clear zip-lock bags for personal food

• Clear Bears Pro Shop bags with merchandise from stadium

• Cameras (6" lens max) and binoculars in fit-to-size case

• Above items must fit into 12" X 12" template box at gate.
