Cops: Batavia coke dealer charged

Bond was set at $500,000 for a Batavia man arrested after authorities seized 890 grams of cocaine, cash and a loaded handgun from his house, police said Friday.

Abraham Ortiz, 35, was being held in the Kane County jail on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a fictitious ID and no Firearm Owners Identification card.

Investigators from the Kane County Sheriff's Special Operations Unit carried out a search warrant Thursday at Ortiz's home on the 500 block of Washington Avenue, seizing 890 grams of cocaine, nearly $2,000 in cash, and a loaded 9 mm handgun, police said.

Lt. Pat Gengler estimated the street value of the drugs at more than $80,000, with a base price of about $100 a gram. "It is always good to take that much drugs off the street," he said. "When you put that with a handgun, it is an even better seizure."

Ortiz also was being held on other, unspecified charges from Lake County, police said. His next court date wasn't available, and it was unclear if had an attorney.
