Buffalo Grove, Prospect grads win Chick Evans scholarships
Two 2009 graduates from District 214, Simon Zielinski (Buffalo Grove High School) and Emily Gruendel (Prospect High School) are among 235 college freshmen nationwide to be awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship this fall.
The Evans Scholars Foundation awards full housing and tuition college scholarships to deserving golf caddies across the U.S. Evans Scholars are chosen on the basis of a strong caddie record, academic excellence, financial need and outstanding character.
The scholarships are renewable for up to four years, and most students are attending one of the 14 universities where the Foundation owns and operates a Scholarship House.
Zielinski attends Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., while Gruendel is at the University of Illinois in Urbana.
"This scholarship is the culmination of years of hard work both on the golf course and in the classroom," said John N. Fix, chairman of the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation. "We welcome these outstanding young leaders to the Evans Scholars family."
More than 8,900 caddies have graduated since the program was founded by Charles "Chick" Evans Jr., famed Chicago amateur golfer and winner of the 1910 Western Open, the 1916 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur and eight Western Amateurs.
