Decadent fundraiser features chocolates, wine

Elgin's Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has more than 100 reasons why you should come out on Saturday to its fundraiser - and they're all sweetly decadent with a dash of milky goodness.

For the third year, Holy Trinity will hold its "Chocolate! The Festival" fundraiser, featuring hundreds of homemade chocolates, bakery goods, a rummage sale and art show.

The delectable day begins at 9 a.m. and will run until 3 p.m. at 357 Division St. in Elgin, where Holy Trinity is located. Admission is free.

Homemade chocolates, prepared by a team of volunteers, will be on sale all day. At least 26 varieties of chocolate will be available ranging from the classic, run-of-the-mill milk chocolate to velvety raspberry and Oreo truffles. Festival goers can purchase chocolates with tickets they buy at the door. A roll of 13 tickets costs $5 and each chocolate costs one ticket.

Chocolate bakery goods will also be sold during the festival for $1 apiece. In keeping with the theme, a special lunch of chocolaty chili (chili with cocoa powder mixed in) and hot dogs will be available.

Elgin's Red Bar Winery and Bistro will be adding more flavor to mix with a wine tasting and sale, making it an afternoon of chardonnay wishes and candy coated dreams.

"We just thought a festival about chocolate would be something different to do in Elgin. We thought we'd pick something a little out of the ordinary and have a wine tasting and chocolate sale," Sandy Simonson, executive assistant program director for Holy Trinity Lutheran, said of the fundraiser, which aims to raise money for the church's youth group and general budgetary needs.

"Making the chocolates is really fun, the volunteers had a great time doing it," she said. "It's an activity that really brings people together."

An art show and enormous rummage sale will round off Chocolate! The Festival. Church organizers have been amassing rummage sale items for the past few months and now have a collection that includes home décor items like vases and pictures, antiques and even a Japanese tea set.

Several local artists will have their work on display for sale as well. Some artists will be giving live demonstrations and hosting workshops for interested audience members.

Weather permitting, the rummage and art sales will be held outside to allow people to mingle together for a weekend of sun, fun and plenty of chocolate.

"Everybody loves chocolate, you can't go wrong with that," Simonson said.
