SUV goes into Arlington Heights pond after accident

An SUV went into a retention pond in Arlington Heights at the northwest corner of Chestnut Avenue and Rand Road Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a car.

Both occupants were able to get out of the water by the time Arlington Heights police officers arrived, according to a report from the department.

Elizabeth Chlopowicz, 47, of Arlington Heights was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign intersection.

The SUV, driven by Basbousa Guirguis, 28, of Palatine, was northwest bound on Rand Road at Chestnut in the left median lane. Chlopowicz was northbound on Techny and stopped at a stop sign. The car attempted to cross Rand Road to northbound Chestnut and struck the SUV, police said.

Chlopowicz' car ended up on a median, and Guirguis' SUV went into the retention pond.

Guirguis also was ticketed because a 16-year-old front-seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt, the report said.

Both drivers and a passenger from each vehicle were taken to Northwest Community Hospital.
