Scarecrow-making classes

Heinz Brothers Greenhouse is hosting a series of scarecrow-making classes for all ages, and Heinz Brothers provides everything needed for your scarecrow: Clothes, straw and additional materials. The classes will be from 6 to 7 tonight, 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to noon Sunday, and 6 to 7 p.m. Monday and Oct. 13 at Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden Center, 2010 E. Main St., St. Charles. Volunteers for recycling program

Kane County is seeking adult volunteers to assist with its electronics recycling program. Volunteers are needed to help unload electronics equipment such as computers, televisions and telephones from the public's vehicles. The program operates on the second Friday and Saturday of each month at the Circuit Clerk building on Randall Road in St. Charles. Since the program began in 2001, more than 38,000 residents and businesses have recycled more than 4.3 million pounds of used electronics. 'Wish' volunteers needed

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois is seeking Wish-Granting volunteers fluent in Spanish and English in Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties. Training will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at Delnor Hospital, 300 Randall Road, Geneva. Wish-Granting volunteers work in teams of two to help grant the wishes of children in their community. These volunteers plan and carry out wishes from start to finish with support from the Make-A-Wish Foundation staff. Attendees must complete a volunteer application and have taken the online training in advance; therefore RSVP is required by Wednesday. Volunteers must be 18 and older and submit an application, reference and background check; and complete an online and brief in-person training to begin granting wishes. Beginning genealogy

The Geneva History Center and Kane County Genealogical Society will co-host "A Beginner's Guide to Genealogy" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St. A genealogy librarian will present two seminars for novices. Cost is $10 for members of the center or society, $15 for nonmembers.
