Cops: Huntley man pulls BB gun on police in parking ticket dispute
An 85-year-old Huntley man is facing a misdemeanor weapons charge after pulling a BB gun on a police sergeant because he was mad about a parking ticket, police said.
Peter J. Reilly, of the 12900 block of Penefield Lane, went to the Huntley police department about 2 p.m. Saturday and spoke with the sergeant, who was seated at the front desk, about the citation.
Police had issued Reilly a $250 ticket for parking in a space reserved for disabled drivers, Deputy Police Chief Todd Fulton said.
During his exchange with the sergeant, Reilly got upset and took out what appeared to be a black handgun that had been hidden in a hat he was holding, according to police.
Reilly then pointed the weapon at the sergeant, who was protected behind bulletproof glass, police say. Officers came to the lobby and took the weapon away from Reilly without anyone getting hurt.
"They were able to take it away from him pretty easily," Fulton said. "He was lucky. We're fortunate it ended the way it did."
After police discovered it was a BB gun, Reilly was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, a misdemeanor. He was released after posting $100 bond. His next court date is Oct. 23.
Reilly, who lives in the undeveloped northwest corner of Huntley, could not be reached for comment late Monday afternoon.
