Fermilab exhibit blends art, science
The Fermilab Art Gallery presents "An Experiment in Perspective" by John Chervinsky on display starting Monday, Sept. 28 to Monday, Nov. 30.
A reception is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Fermilab Art Gallery in Wilson Hall.
Chervinsky is a lab engineer at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Chervinsky writes about his work, "My still lifes are intended to be presented in the manner of a science demonstration or imaginary physics experiment. Chalk markings on blackboards are juxtaposed with real objects to create tensions between the physical world and the imaginary constructs that we use to define it. To accomplish the illusory effect of the chalk, I point a view camera toward the horizon point of two right-angled chalkboards. Markings are drawn into the three-dimensional field (in forced perspective) such that, from the fixed point of view of the camera, they appear to have depth, or to be floating in space, or on the surface plane of the photograph."
The gallery is open before and after Arts, Lectures and Film series events. Enter through Kirk and Pine streets or Batavia Road. Art Gallery also is open by appointment; contact Georgia Schwender Georgia@fnal.gov, (630) 840-6825 or fnal.gov/pub/Art_Gallery/.
