Woodstock's stars too much for Grayslake Central

Woodstock's football roster lists Western Michigan-bound defensive end/running back Mike Liedtke at 6 feet 4 and 220 pounds.

He's much bigger, actually.

Woodstock's 6-3 quarterback Logan Kunzie is one of the Fox Valley Conference's top passers.

Numbers - more than 800 passing yards through four weeks - don't do him justice either.

And Kunzie's numbers said plenty Friday night, as Woodstock crushed Grayslake Central 41-7, spoiling the Rams' soggy homecoming.

Kunzie completed 23 of 34 passes for 294 yards and 2 touchdowns (no interceptions), as Woodstock moved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the FVC Fox Division.

Grayslake Central fell to 2-3, 1-2.

"The quarterback was excellent," Rams coach Nick Goshe said of Kunzie. "He's better than advertised and on film, that's for sure. He's, by far, the best quarterback we've seen. And then he had a great night."

So, too, did Liedtke. Besides his 3 sacks, the senior - who's actually 6-4 and a rock-solid 250 pounds - rushed for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Blue Streaks are definitely a passing team, but the Rams' defense had trouble containing the mammoth running back too.

"Tonight was the first night that we played as a full team," Liedtke said. "The holes were really nice. We've had a horrible run game these first four games so we came out tonight and our goal was to get over 100 yards rushing and shut (Grayslake Central) down with our defense, and that's exactly what we did."

Kunzie's proficiency made Liedtke's job easier.

"I think our pass game helped (the run game) out a lot," Liedtke said, "because (Grayslake Central) had to keep guessing what we were doing."

While Grayslake Central went three-and-out on its first two possessions, Woodstock put together impressive drives the first two times it had the ball and scored twice.

Kunzie threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Mike Kremske (8 catches, 134 yards), before Liedtke scored from 3 yards out early in the second quarter.

Grayslake Central responded with its only big highlight, an 80-yard TD pass from quarterback Mike Gentile to 6-5 tight end C.J. Stempeck on a screen.

"We saw how aggressive they were defensively, so we started calling a lot of misdirection - a lot of screens and reverses," Goshe said. "We caught them on a screen, got the blocks that we needed, and our tight end was able to take it (to the end zone)."

Kunzie's 3-yard pass to Blake Johnson in the end zone in the closing seconds of the first half hiked the Blue Streaks' lead to 21-7.

Liedtke added TD runs of 11 and 26 yards in the second half, and Drew Walkington scored on a 10-yard run.

The Rams generated only 6 first downs, two coming on their final series of the game. Woodstock, in comparison, registered a hefty 27 first downs.

"They just ate us up," Goshe said. "Offensively, we couldn't move the ball to help our defense out, and defensively, their quarterback kind of picked us apart. Their wide outs were making plays. They had us off-balance all night."
