Elk Grove man denies he tried to kill cop

An Elk Grove Village man pleaded not guilty Friday to attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery charges stemming from a July 14 high-speed chase that ended with him shot by police near the Elgin Toll Plaza.

Andrzej Wojtkielewicz, 21, denied claims he tried to run over a police officer after he was forced to pull over at the toll plaza at the end of a 30-mile chase that began in Chicago.

Wojtkielewicz appeared in court in a wheelchair complaining of nerve damage to one of his feet, the result of being shot by an officer who said he feared the Elk Grove man was trying to injure his partner.

The chase began when Chicago police tried to pull him over after a suspected drug deal.

Wojtkielewicz faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted. He remains in the Kane County jail on $1 million bond pending his next court appearance Oct. 16.
