Scouting: Leyden @ Morton
WEST SUBURBAN GOLD
Leyden (2-2, 1-1) at Morton (1-3, 0-2)
When 7:30 p.m. today at Morton West, Berwyn
Last week Leyden d. Hinsdale South 27-20; Morton lost to Addison Trail 34-14
Outlook This was almost a walk-through in the past but it hasn't been the case this year even though former head coach and offensive coordinator George Baglione (1990-94) didn't take over at Morton until midsummer. Morton, which hasn't won a WSC Gold game since 2005, beat 3-1 Reavis 30-6 in the opener, was close with York at half and lost to Willowbrook 28-27 on a TD with 1:13 left. "It's the best-looking Morton team I've seen in my 10 years here," said Leyden coach Tom Cerasani. "They run a solid (double-slot motion) offense and they present some problems. You can tell their kids believe in what they're doing." QB Carlos Vargas is a passing and running threat for the Leyden defense led by Jeff Cascella and Dan Kiebler. Leyden has also gotten a boost the last two weeks from QB David Rose (473 yards passing) to take some of the pressure off RB Angel Maldonado (722 yards). "David is playing with a lot of confidence," Cerasani said.
