Scouting: Guerin @ Marmion

Game time: 1 p.m. Saturday.
Last year Did not play.
Last weekImmaculate Conception 46, Guerin 21; Marmion 41, Marian Central 27.
Outlook: These two teams square off in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover. Guerin, a marriage between parochial schools Mother Guerin and Holy Cross, won its first two games, against St. Francis deSales and Elmwood Park. Senior co-captain Dennis Kelly heads the Gators at quarterback, and after Immaculate Conception posted a 26-0 halftime lead, he tried to lead Guerin back and finished 12-of-18 passing for 206 yards. Nick D'Alessandro ran for 126 yards in a loss to Wheaton Academy, and receivers Tim Rieger, Hugo Diaz and Matt Albanese have had their moments. Marmion's moment seems to be now. After the Cadets impressively outlasted Marian Central they became the sole 2-0 team in the SCC Blue, and seek their first conference title since 1998. "I guess two weeks ago against St. Francis it wasn't a fluke," said Marmion coach Dan Thorpe. But first things first. Marmion unfortunately lost defensive tackle Andrew Voelsch (knee) against Marian Central, but should present the 2009 debut of 6-foot-5, 290-pound tackle Ryan Lovelace (foot) in Saturday's homecoming game. He and 275-pound tackle Jake Winkel make for an impressive pair on the line. And Cadets fans recalled an extra ingredient missing for most of three games when the 4.48 speedster, senior back Matt Pircon, took a sweep 31 yards for a touchdown in his first work since Week 1 against South Elgin. His score and a 2-point conversion from another speedster, quarterback Will Sterne, tied Marian 20-20 and then running back-linebacker T.J. Lally continued the momentum with a touchdown run and a 55-yard interception return. This week the Cadets try to contain Kelly and his spread offense that removes defenders from the middle of the field with four receivers. Part of the equation is not letting Kelly get his feet set. Marmion may have its sights set on further goals, but Thorpe certainly won't let that happen. "We just want to go 1-0 this week," he said.
