Scouting: Elk Grove @ Wheeling
MID-SUBURBAN EAST
Elk Grove (3-1) at Wheeling (2-2)
When 7:30 p.m. today
Last week Elk Grove d. Conant 22-19; Wheeling lost to Schaumburg 37-13
Outlook Western Michigan-bound RB Weston Ross is back after a three-game absence (sprained foot) following a 179-yard effort in the opener. "I feel really good about where we're at, but I'm not most excited about Ross being back this week," said Elk Grove coach Brian Doll with a laugh. "Obviously we want to play the best players and see where we are and it's a good test for our defense against another solid running back." Elk Grove also passed a big test last week as it rallied from a 19-7 fourth-quarter deficit behind dual-threat QB Nick Meyer (1,028 total yards, 14 TDs) and emerging junior RB Mike Wary (208 yards, 3 TDs). "(Meyer) can really move and we just have to defend the whole field with him," said Wheeling coach Dave Dunbar. "Defensively they try to do some different things to mess up your blocking schemes." Wheeling looks to rebound from consecutive losses to Fremd and Schaumburg. "We know we're right there and we played tough for three quarters (last week)," Dunbar said, "but we have to play tough for four quarters." Wheeling leads the series 15-9.
