Scouting: Aurora Christian @ Montini
Aurora Christian (3-1) at Montini (2-2)
Game time 1 p.m. Saturday
Last year Did not play.
Last week Aurora Christian 48, Wheaton Academy 31; St. Francis 51, Montini 31.
Outlook After Sacred Heart-Griffin and St. Francis, Montini is now 0-2 against defending state champions. How will they fare against state runners-up in this Suburban Christian Conference crossover? It depends if the Broncos are able to stop the run. St. Francis rang up 374 yards on the ground against Montini, which nearly came all the way back from a 35-7 deficit before St. Francis caught its second wind. The good news for Montini was quarterback Brandon Pechloff regrouped from 3 interceptions to throw 4 touchdown passes, including 2 to Jordan Westerkamp and an amazing 58-yard catch-and-run by the player considered to be the top Driscoll transfer, Nick Campanella, who also ran for 111 yards. Aurora Christian, defending Class 4A runner-up, may not have St. Francis' size on the line and variety in the backfield, but the Eagles definitely have the speed. Quarterback Grayson Roberts has thrown for 654 yards, 10 interceptions. Johnny Magee has run for 220 and 234 yards the last two weeks. In Week 3 his twin brother Sheldon caught 9 passes for 250 yards. "They're an explosive team," Montini coach Chris Andriano said. "They can score at any time, really." And Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe is just fine with his line of Matt Wilger, David Benson, Arthur Sampson, Todd Clapp and Dean Griffing - also the Eagles' defensive player of the week against Wheaton Academy. Beebe, who played against fellow former receiver and Montini assistant Bob Westerkamp (Jordan's father) in the 1983 All-Star Shrine game, sees no faults in Montini's line play, either. It'll come down, he says, to his pet statistic turnover ratio. "We just can't throw interceptions and they can't throw interceptions," Beebe said.
Next week Immaculate Conception (2-2, 1-1) at Aurora Christian
