Buffalo Grove child molester accused of more crimes
Sentencing for an admitted Buffalo Grove molester was postponed Wednesday because of additional charges that prosecutors say were lodged against him after a new case involving two girls developed last week.
Michael Newby, 53, of the 900 block of Hilldale Lane, was slated to be sentenced in Lake County circuit court for pleading guilty to criminal sexual assault. As part of a plea deal, Newby's maximum prison sentence was capped at 10 years.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Mary Stanton agreed to drop other charges against Newby in exchange for his guilty plea. A woman, now 22, told Buffalo Grove police she had been repeatedly molested by Newby from Jan. 1 to Oct 31, 2000.
Stanton said the sentencing was delayed because new charges of predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual assault were leveled against Newby as the latest case was developed by Buffalo Grove police last week.
Prosecutors accuse Newby of molesting two other girls in the new charges. He now is being held in lieu of 10 percent of a $250,000 bond in the Lake County jail, above the previously established $40,000.
Stanton said Newby molested one victim, now 16, from 1999 to 2006. The other victim, a disabled woman now 20, was molested from 2005 until Newby's arrest in the first case in January, said Stanton.
Newby faces a maximum of 60 years behind bars if convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault, which prosecutors say occurred against the younger victim.
Buffalo Grove police said Newby came to their attention Jan. 14, when they acted on an FBI tip and went to the Hilldale Lane house he shared with his girlfriend to search for child pornography. Prosecutors said a computer examination led to child porn charges against Newby.
After Newby was hit with the child pornography charges, which were dismissed as part of his plea bargain, authorities said they contacted several young women who were known to have associated with him when they were children. That's when the 22-year-old woman told of being molested by Newby in 2000, prosecutors said.
Stanton said Newby has a new sentencing date of Oct. 7 for the first case. He has a tentative court appearance set for the same day on the newest case.
