Street Dance Saturday in Libertyville

MainStreet Libertyville's annual Street Dance fundraiser is back on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the heart of downtown Libertyville. MainStreet Libertyville's Executive Director Randy Nelson tells us what you need to know.

Q. What makes this such a fabulous event?

A. The entire community really comes out for it, young, old and in-between. It's the socializing that everyone likes - getting to see your friends and neighbors against a backdrop of great music, food and fun auction items.

Q. How long has this event been in existence? How has it changed, and what is new this year?

A. This will be our 18th year. We try to make this a very special Libertyville showcase event, using all Libertyville bands and food vendors. We are very proud of our remarkable homegrown entertainers. And everyone knows about the "Libertyville Food Network" - a street full of absolutely terrific places to eat and enjoy your favorite beverages in downtown Libertyville.

Q. What's the highlight of the event?

A. We are featuring four bands for virtually continuous music all evening long, kicking off with Kev & Co. at 5:30 p.m., followed by Tokyo Fish Market, Vardin's Groove and Betty Soul. Music will end at 11:30 p.m. Major entertainment for your musical dollar!

Q. What kind of activities will appeal to kids and families?

A. It's fun to see all the auction items that will be inside the Civic Center. They run the gamut from kid's items to restaurant gift certificates to album covers signed by Eric Clapton and Jimmy Buffett. Libertyville's Berry Tire & Auto has even donated a "race-run" tire used by Tony Stewart when he won the NASCAR race at Michigan this year, complete with certificate of authenticity. Talk about a unique coffee table!

Q. What about adults? What does the event offer them?

A. Music, fun, friends and food. And all inside restrooms are reserved for women only.

Q. What kinds of food and beverages will be for sale?

A. A Picnic Basket will provide a very wide range of delicious food, from charcoal-cooked burgers and brats to their signature salads. Parkview Gourmet will offer a full array of wines, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory will have chocolate treats and Caribou Coffee will provide specialty coffees and teas.

Q. Tell us about the volunteers and organizers who pull this together.

A. They are simply remarkable. The ironic part is that it takes about 150 volunteers to make this look so effortless. Pam Hume, Jeff McClurg, Stacey Dorow and Kathleen Salemi are tireless in their dedication to make this a night to remember for the entire community. Even the bands donate their time, energy and skills to help make Libertyville a very special place to live and play.

Q. Is there anything else we should know?

A. Remember that MainStreet's Street Dance 2009 puts the fun in fundraising!
