Let communities pay for own police
Sen. Durbin boasts in the Fence Post that Congress put $1 billion into the COPS Program and he supports a proposal for another $3 billion. And he suggests that Elgin and Hanover Park reapply for the money since they didn't get any the first time around.
Senator: Do you understand that the federal government, which you help run, is broke? You can't pay your bills so your $4 billion must be borrowed, which forces the children and grandchildren of everyone reading this paper to pay for this. When did paying for local police become a responsibility of a broke federal government? And why is it so important that you want to force future generations to pay for today's expenses?
How about if you just let the local folks decide how many police to hire and how to pay for them?
That way, you won't have to force the people in Elgin and Hanover Park to pay for the police in another town.
