Fox rallies Cubs from brink of loss
ST. LOUIS - The fireworks had already started at Busch Stadium on Sunday night, signaling a third walk-off victory by the Cardinals over the Cubs. But hold on.
An interference call at second base wiped out the potential winning run, and given new life, the Cubs came back with 3 in the 11th, with Jake Fox hitting a 2-run homer to put them ahead and give them a 6-3 victory.
"You happen to be put into a situation," said Fox, who has 11 homers and 41 RBI in 74 games. "In that kind of situation, you go up there looking for a pitch to put a good swing on."
The game looked lost in the ninth when Ryan Ludwick grounded to second base with the bases loaded. The relay throw back to first by shortstop Ryan Theriot was off line, and Ludwick was called safe until baserunner Matt Holiday was called out for sliding out of the baseline and the Cubs were awarded a double play.
A blown save by former closer Kevin Gregg in the eighth took a possible victory away from starter Carlos Zambrano, who went 6 innings.
Zambrano got big-time defensive help by center fielder Kosuke Fukudome in the first. With runners on first and third and two outs, Ludwick hit a deep drive to center. Fukudome raced back, caught the ball and hit his head on the padded wall. He was OK and stayed in the game.
"He had the imprints of the wall a little bit on his forehead," said manager Lou Piniella.
Colvin coming: The Cubs will call up outfielder Tyler Colvin from Class AA Tennessee today to take the place of Milton Bradley, who was suspended for the season by the Cubs.
Colvin was the Cubs' No. 1 draft pick in 2006. He began this season at Class A Daytona after undergoing Tommy John surgery. After his promotion to Tennessee, he batted .300 in 84 games with 14 homers and 50 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .334 and a slugging percentage of .524. Colvin had 16 walks and 57 strikeouts at Double-A.
Manager Lou Piniella says Colvin will play.
"We'll get a look at our future," Piniella said. "He's had a really nice year in Double-A and finished up strong. We're going to put him in the outfield and let him play. I don't know exactly what position. We'll talk to him tomorrow when he comes in. He'll be playing the balance of our games, and it will give us a look at one of our top prospects."
Colvin helped lead Tennessee to the Southern League finals, in which they were defeated three games to one by Jacksonville.
