County board should walk the walk
We haven't heard lately about the ongoing Kane County budget cut battle between Sheriff Perez and County Clerk Seyller. However, there are questions we should ask about the county board that haven't been covered.
How many years have they been cutting the budget? I can't believe that this is the first year. During that time did they give themselves a raise? Do they as part-timers receive benefits? If so, why? What makes them feel deserving while others lost their jobs?
Cutting the budget doesn't fix the problem. Cuts don't provide the services, prevent crime, or establish a reasonable and responsible judicial system. However, with the board's lack of foresight and leadership it is hardly surprising that they have such limited vision.
Did they keep the former jail operational as a possibility for overcrowding or as a possible source of revenue to rent space to other counties? Did they purchase the old Wards building when it could have been done at a reasonable cost? How much are they spending on legal fees and space for these and other stupid actions on their part?
Maybe there should be an investigation of the county board. Do they really know their job? Maybe they just don't get it. Do they really understand where the money needs to be spent? Do they meet when residents can easily attend? Seems as though they just try talking a good talk with little to no action.
If this is the case, they should follow the example of the University of Illinois board and just resign.
We all feel the economy pinch, but some things you don't give up. You don't give up police protection, the justice system, or health care. They were elected to do a job. To blindly cut doesn't get to the problem. It's time for them to start walking the walk or hit the bricks. I hope we remember that next election.
