Die-hard Cubs fans deserve much better
Once again we are coming to the end of another baseball season, and what have the Chicago Cubs got to show for it? After 101 years, thousands and thousands of die-hard and brokenhearted Chicago Cubs fans are relegated to the plaintive cry of "Wait 'til next year!"
Wait for what? More heartbreak? More disappointment?
To say the least the Chicago Cubs have the most loyal, faithful and the most forgiving fans in the whole of any sport you can name. Chicago Cubs fans are without equal, and I would say that perhaps the most loyal and brokenhearted fan is #10 Ron Santo. How he loves his Chicago Cubs.
If only the love of the fans could be translated to those who would call themselves professional baseball players, what a team we would have. I do not envy Lou Piniella in his job of seeking to motivate this inept group of ball players into a pennant-contending team.
You get the feeling that some of the ball players have the attitude of "I could care less." When are we going to be blessed in seeing them "execute" with men on base? Oh, the opportunities we have wasted. What do we have to do in order to turn the tide?
Another thing I noted is that in the 7th inning at a home game we have a person who leads in singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." For the most part the singer is either a celebrity or what have you. To me it seems to be far more fitting if a drawing could be held among the Cubs fans and some lucky Cubs fan be allowed to lead the singing. Maybe not every game, but at least once in a while. What a thrill this would be for them. Something they would remember for the rest of their lives. And furthermore: THEY DESERVE THIS OPPORTUNITY!
These are my thoughts, but what do I know? After all I am a White Sox fan.
