Scouting: St. Charles East @ South Elgin

St. Charles East (1-2, 1-0) at South Elgin (3-0, 1-0)

When: today at 7:30 p.m. at Millennium Field

Last year: St. Charles East 42, South Elgin 3

Last week: South Elgin 28, Neuqua Valley 26; St. Charles East 41, Streamwood 7

Outlook: South Elgin looks to extend its hot start against the Saints, who lost their first two games to quality nonconference opponents Geneva (13-6) and Naperville Central (28-7). St. Charles East has won the first three meetings in this Upstate Eight Conference series by scores of 35-7 (2006), 38-19 (2007) and 42-3 (2008). The Saints attack with the running back trio of Matt Payne, Cory Campbell and Zach Zajicek, whose road to pay dirt is paved by a gigantic offensive line that helped the offense amass 196 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns last week against Streamwood. Payne scored 4 of those touchdowns on runs of 12, 10, 14 and 14 yards. That's a concern for South Elgin, which allowed 299 yards rushing last week in a victory against Neuqua Valley's spread offense. "They were a tough group last year," South Elgin coach Dale Schabert said of the Saints' line. "That's where we had our problems with them. That's the heart of their offense right now." East quarterback Nolan Possley completed 9-of-16 passes for 113 yards and ran for a touchdown last week. His offense will have to avoid take-aways. The Storm defense already has 9 fumble recoveries (1 for a touchdown) and 3 interceptions.
