When: today at 7 p.m.
Last year: Oregon 20, Burlington Central 7
Last week: Burlington Central 35, Byron 13; Oregon 35, Hampshire 13
Outlook: Last week Central put two lopsided losses to good teams to open the season in the rearview mirror and notched its first victory in convincing style. The young Rockets stayed the course and never stopped believing. "We knew we had a pretty good ballclub, but we also knew we played some pretty good competition," coach Aaron Wichman said. "We also knew we were pretty young. We don't start too many seniors. It was good to see those guys still believe in what we were teaching, still practicing hard, knowing eventually good things would happen." The Rockets used long drives to eat clock and took advantage of multiple take-aways by their defense. Junior quarterback Tim Maroder followed the effective blocking of his offensive line on touchdown runs of 11, 25 and 63 yards, and he threw to Kevin Kellish for a first-quarter score. The Central defense will be tested by Oregon's no-frills running game. The Hawks rushed for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns against Hampshire and threw for 2 more scores. "Every year it's a low-scoring, hard-hitting, physical affair and we expect the same thing," Wichman said.
