Man charged in foiled Mundelein robbery
Jaime Aguirre was charged in federal court Thursday with bank robbery in the failed attempt to steal more than $250,000 from the Consumers Cooperative Credit Union in Mundelein.
Aguirre had been arrested by Mundelein police immediately following the robbery Wednesday morning. According to FBI special agent Mark John, who filed the federal complaint, a customer leaving the credit union as Aguirre went in shortly after 9 a.m. noticed he immediately attempted a robbery and called police. According to John, Aguirre brandished a black revolver and threatened cashiers into giving him money and made off with a black plastic garbage bag filled with $266,786.30, including a packet of marked bills.
Mundelein police arrived on the scene within minutes as Aguirre was leaving the business. He was found and arrested nearby, having ditched what turned out to be a fake revolver. Officers recovered all the money and the marked bills and, according to John, Aguirre admitted to the attempted robbery.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Krull said Aguirre is charged with bank robbery. She could not provide his age or residence.
