Career offender had rap sheet dating to '87
Robert R. Maday had been in custody since last December, when he was stopped for speeding in Schaumburg just two hours after the robbery of a Buffalo Grove bank.
But this week's chain of events -- beginning when he escaped court custody Thursday by overpowering two officials, stealing their guns and hijacking a car -- was only the latest, if perhaps the most brazen, entry in Maday's long rap sheet. A federal complaint calls him a "career offender."
Here's a look at Maday's criminal history, which started before his 17th birthday:
• May 19, 1987: Convicted of robbery, kidnapping, burglary, grand theft, conspiracy to commit a felony, aggravated battery, unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting an officer and escape in Dade County, Fla.; sentenced to 10 years.
• June 11, 1991: Released from prison.
• May 21, 1993: Convicted of reckless endangerment and open lewdness in Dauphin County, Pa. Sentenced to 12 months probation and paid a fine.
• Aug. 9, 1994: Convicted of armed bank robbery in Pennsylvania.
• Aug. 17, 1994: Convicted of second bank robbery in Pennsylvania. Sentenced to 5 to 15 years for both offenses.
• Sept. 6, 2005: Granted parole after serving more than 11 years in federal and state prisons. Within the year, returns to Elk Grove Village as a parolee to be supervised by Illinois officials.
• Oct. 14-28, 2008: Commits a series of robberies with toy or pellet gun in the Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates area. All involve taking purses or cash from female victims.
• Oct. 29, 2008: Robs Midwest Bank, 585 Ela Road in Lake Zurich, of approximately $3,300.
• Nov. 5, 2008: Attempts to rob Benjamin Franklin Bank, 830 E. Kensington Road in Arlington Heights, but leaves with no money.
• Robs First American Bank, 80 Stratford Drive in Bloomingdale, of approximately $17,100.
• Nov. 12, 2008: Robs Hoffman Estates Community Bank, 2497 W. Golf Road, of approximately $4,000.
• Nov. 21, 2008: Robs McHenry Savings Bank in Huntley of approximately $15,200.
• Dec. 29, 2008: Robs Harris Bank, 1190 N. McHenry Road in Buffalo Grove, of approximately $13,600. About two hours later, pulled over in Schaumburg near Martingale and Schaumburg roads for going 82 mph in a 40 mph zone and other traffic offenses. Arrested after Schaumburg after police find a pellet gun, toy guns, cocaine, a ski mask and more than $15,000 in cash in his car.
• Sept. 17, 2009: While being transported to the Rolling Meadows courthouse for sentencing in the October robberies, overpowers two state's attorney's officials, steals their weapons and hijacks a car.
• Sept. 18, 2009: Hijacks car from woman in Hoffman Esates. Drives to Bloomingdale and robs First American Bank, 80 Stratford Drive in Bloomingdale, of $7,000. Arrested after crashing car in West Chicago during a chas
