Sox say bye to Colon

Based on the one-year, $1 million contract Bartolo Colon signed on Jan. 15, the White Sox weren't expecting much from the veteran pitcher this season.

That's what they got from Colon - a 3-6 record and 4.19 ERA in 12 starts.

Before Wednesday night's game at Seattle, the Sox released Colon.

"When he was on the mound, he gave us his best effort," manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters. "I wish him the best."

Colon twice was placed on the disabled list this year, most recently July 25 with right- elbow inflammation. Both times, Colon didn't follow his rehab program and was basically out of touch.

Sox general manager Kenny Williams was asked on Sept. 4 if he was disappointed with Colon.

"Yes, I'm surprised by it," Williams said. "What are you going to do? What are you going to do?"

The White Sox decided what to do Wednesday.

Back to the basics: Before the Sox played the Mariners on Wednesday, manager Ozzie Guillen said there are going to be some changes in February.

"That's going to be our main thing in spring training, make sure we do the little things and make sure we do them right," Guillen told reporters. "Day in and day out, if we do that we won't be in a slump like this year because somebody will do something to break it up."

Working on the little things is going to start in training camp.

"More bunting," Guillen said. "One station working on the hit-and-run in game situations. We're going to need it because this year is pretty bad."

Guillen also wants his players work closer with third-base coach Jeff Cox.

"We missed so many signs this year, it's unbelievable," Guillen said.
