Show some faith and trust in truck drivers
I am responding to Mr. Roebert's commentary in the Aug. 31 Fence Post. It should be known that I do not drive large trucks for a living but do spend a lot of time on road and feel for those who drive large trucks due to the many restrictions put upon them.
Contrary to Mr. Roebert's opinion, I think it's great they can drive 65 mph. I believe that allowing or not allowing truckers to drive 65 mph is not just a matter of simple physics but of trust. OK, so the impact force is 40 percent greater than that of 55 mph. However, although I do not have the exact statistics to prove it, I would think that if someone had 26,000 pounds. dropped on him, it wouldn't matter if it were dropped at 55 mph or 65 mph. The result would be the same.
As for the increase in breaking time, even driver's education students know that the faster you go the longer the breaking time is required. To think that the truckers don't know that and wouldn't adjust accordingly shows a total distrust in these professionals. What a shame.
If that comment was made in regards to truckers not having enough time to slow down in the event someone cuts them off, then make a law that disallows cars from cutting off trucks. Don't punish/distrust the truckers on the possibility of a maybe of the ignorance of non-truckers. Trust. Believe. Be of good cheer. They know what they are doing. Check out Ohio.
Let them drive 65, and I bet the world will still stay alive.
