Offensive outburst sinks Maine West
An offensive explosion in the second quarter by visiting Waukegan did in Maine West on Friday night.
The Bulldogs put up 34 second-quarter points and were able to survive a second-half comeback attempt by the Warriors for a 41-30 Central Suburban League football crossover victory in Des Plaines.
It was big plays that allowed for the scoring outburst.
The Bulldogs scored on consecutive offensive plays in the quarter - a 52-yard run by running back Keontae Coleman and a 61-yard pass play from Akeem Springs to receiver David Davis.
Then, after a Maine West (1-2) field goal by Anes Kadiric, Mike Springs scored on an 83-yard kick return for the Bulldogs.
Springs also had 5 catches for 125 yards and intercepted a pass.
"I ask a lot out of Mike," Waukegan (1-2) coach Derek Dewitt said after his first victory at the school. "He's 'Mr. Everything.'"
Sophomore quarterback Akeem Springs completed 11-of-23 passes for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns - with 242 yards in the first half.
"Our rookie quarterback was a little more comfortable today, our line played good and we played hard," Dewitt said.
The Warriors were able to battle back from a 34-10 halftime deficit because of a more-effective passing game than it had in the first half. Quarterback Ron Gajewski threw for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns in the second half.
And after a tough first half completion-wise - Gajewski connected on just 6-of-20 - he was able to complete 17-of-39 after the intermission.
Unfortunately for Maine West, Gajewski's final totals of 259 passing yards and 4 touchdowns were not enough to win.
