Environmental talks in Arlington Hts.

The Arlington Heights Environmental Commission and the Arlington Heights Cool Cities Coalition will jointly hold a series of discussions this week, where residents will hear environmental project ideas and discuss how they can work to make a difference.

• 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Arlington Heights Senior Center, 1801 W. Central Road. Featured presenters are Liz Smart of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County and educator Mary Stitt.

• 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10 at Frontier Park, 1933 Kennicott. Featured presenters are Robert Schultz, energy manager of Arlington Heights Elementary District 25 and John O'Halloran, external affairs manager for Exelon.

• At 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Hendrickson Room, join the featured presenter Jerome McDonnell, host of "Worldview" on Chicago Public Radio, WBEZ-FM.

Township GOP has picnic on Sunday

The Republican Family Picnic, hosted by the Elk Grove and Schaumburg Township Republican Organizations, will be held 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, in Busse Woods Grove 27, at Arlington Heights and Landmeier roads in Elk Grove Village.

There will be many candidates there to meet and greet. The $25 per family or household buys admission, burgers, brats, hot dogs, corn on the cob, beer, pop, water, entertainment and a $5 50/50 raffle ticket.

Wheeling Park Dist. gets budget award

The Wheeling Park District has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

The award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The park district entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines, designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

Recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

"Modern Iran, Ancient Persia" is the topic of a talk at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Elk Grove Village Public Library, 1001 Wellington Ave.
