Fremd takes care of Hersey

The fans of both schools came in vast numbers to support their Mid-Surburban League football teams Friday night when Fremd hosted Hersey.

But it was the home fans who had the most fun as the Vikings took a 38-7 crossover victory over the Huskies (0-2).

The Vikings were the first to strike when senior tailback Evan Wright galloped 92 yards to the end zone with a kickoff.

"The wedge guys, I couldn't do it without them," said Wright, who also rushed for 102 yards and touchdown on 24 carries. "They gave me a nice seam and I just ran with it. A lot of them are (back) from last season."

"We had confidence in our offense," said Fremd coach Mike Donatucci. "We played as tough in the first half as we did in the second. It was just a matter of execution. You've got to give credit to Hersey, they had no quit, and have a tough team."

On three separate occasions inside the 20-yard line, the Huskies defense was unyielding in allowing the Vikings into the end zone. Huskies senior linebacker Jake Knauss tallied 2 sacks.

The first-half time of possession favored the Vikings for nearly 15 minutes. They would ultimately tack on 3 points from a Kevin Schaeffer field goal, to make the score 10-0 after missed chances to get in the end zone.

After a three-and-out by the Huskies following halftime, the Vikings would score on a connection between junior quarterback Richard Concialdi and junior tight end Jack Konopka.

The Vikings would break the game wide open after 2 turnovers on consecutive possessions by the Huskies, scoring 21 points in the third quarter.

The Huskies defense bailed out the offense throughout the first half but had done all it could.

"Turnovers, field position and failure to get the ball and sustain a drive," said Hersey head coach Mark Gunther explaining the game summary. "Realistically we only gave up 3 offensive points, but we couldnt give our 'D' a rest. We need to execute better on the offensive side.

"We are in no panic, we need to get better in what we do. There's a lot of season left."

The Huskies, who just tallied their first touchdown of the year in the fourth quarter, go on to play Schaumburg. The Vikings play on the road at Wheeling.
