Waukegan man charged after police chase

A Waukegan man who led police on a vehicle chase in which he nearly sideswiped two squad cars before trying to flee on foot, had to be Tasered and now faces multiple felony charges, police said.

Brian Wilson, 27, of the 3000 block of 8th Street, was driving north in the 700 block of Green Bay Road in a Ford Expedition when he nearly sideswiped one squad car heading in the opposite direction, Waukegan Police Lt. Ed Fitzgerald said.

The officer activated his emergency lights, Fitzgerald said, and pulled behind the Expedition to make a traffic stop. Wilson pulled over briefly, Fitzgerald said, before driving off.

Wilson headed east onto Grand Avenue and then turned into a subdivision, where he looped around and came back out heading west on Grand Avenue, Fitzgerald said. While chasing Wilson through the subdivision, the officer turned off his emergency lights and dropped back.

"We have a strict policy against engaging in a chase for a traffic offense, so the officer hung back but continued to follow," he said. "We do not want to injure or kill another driver in a chase over something traffic related."

With the officer continuing to follow, Wilson turned onto Jackson Street where he almost hit another squad car, Fitzgerald said.

The second officer joined in and tailed Wilson to Jackson and Porter streets, where Wilson jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run. Police chased and tapered him, Fitzgerald said.

Wilson was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, a class two felony, aggravated DUI while on a revoked license, aggravated DUI while driving without insurance, aggravated driving on a revoked license, and aggravated fleeing and eluding police, which are class four felonies.

If convicted, he could spend up to seven years behind bars. He is held at Lake County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond, of which 10 percent must be posted.

Fitzgerald added Wilson refused to submit to a Breathalyzer test and a blood draw to test his blood alcohol content.
