Fire engulfs second floor of house in Bartlett

A fire destroyed much of a home in Bartlett Saturday, officials said, but no one was hurt.

A neighbor noticed the fire late Saturday morning in the upper floor of the split-level house at 963 E. Castlewood Lane, and banged on the door to wake up a man napping inside, who got out unharmed.

The fire started in the garage, and by the time firefighters arrived four minutes after being called, it was billowing out the front into the attic and had spread to two vehicles in the driveway, Bartlett Fire Protection District Acting Battalion Chief Richard Wilson said.

Firefighters searched the home to make sure no one else was inside, Wilson said.

The garage and master bedroom above it were completely destroyed, as were the vehicles, and there was smoke and water damage through much of the house, Wilson said, causing an estimated $150,000 in damage and leaving the building uninhabitable.

The family who lived there will stay with relatives.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but was not believed to be suspicious.

Firefighters from Carol Stream, Elgin, Hanover Park, Pingree Grove, Rutland-Dundee, South Elgin, St. Charles, Streamwood and Wheaton helped respond to the blaze.
