Judge: Man guilty of Naperville drug trafficking
A Maywood man faces 18 to 80 years in prison for being in possession of about 600 Ecstasy pills during a Naperville traffic stop.
Troy L. Campbell, 30, was convicted earlier this week of controlled substance trafficking and the unlawful possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver. His sentencing is Oct. 5.
Police stopped a car in which Campbell was a passenger at 9:15 p.m., April 18, 2008, on I-290 near York Road. Prosecutors said authorities acted on a tip about possible drug trafficking involving the car's occupants. So, police followed the car and made a stop after they said the driver made several traffic violations.
DuPage State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said Campbell had just returned from Detroit, where he purchased the popular club drug, and was on his way home to sell the pills. A small amount of marijuana also was recovered, the prosecutor said.
"Drug dealers such as Mr. Campbell are a scourge on society," Birkett said in a written statement. "They care for nothing but themselves, making a living at the financial, physical and emotional expense of others."
The driver, Cherese T. Smith, 35, of Naperville, had faced similar drug charges. Prosecutors, though, were forced to drop the charges after a judge's Jan. 8 ruling quashing her arrest and the case's evidence due to an improper police search.
