Sox call up 2 pitchers
Prior to today's game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Jhonny Nunez from Class AAA Charlotte and purchased the contract of right-hander Daniel Hudson from Charlotte.
Nunez, 23, combined to go 5-0 with a 2.55 ERA (20 ER/70.2 IP), 4 saves and 79 strikeouts this season between Class AA Birmingham and Charlotte. He averaged 10.1 strikeouts per 9.0 IP and limited opponents to .226 (57-252) average.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder was acquired from the Yankees in part of a five-player trade on November 13, 2008.
Hudson, 22, went 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA (38 ER/147.1 IP) and 166 strikeouts in 26 starts between four minor-league stops in 2009. His 166 strikeouts are tied for second among all minor leaguers, and his 14 wins are tied for seventh.
Hudson held opponents to a .200 (105-525) average, posted a 4.9 strikeout-to-walk ratio (34 BB) and averaged 10.1 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.
The 6-foot-4, 220 pound Hudson began the season at Class A Kannapolis before advancing to Class A Winston-Salem, Class AA Birmingham and Charlotte. He won his final nine decisions, including a 7-0 record with a 1.60 ERA (10 ER/56.1 IP) at Birmingham.
Hudson, who will wear uniform No. 54, has no major-league experience. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 draft and is the second member of the White Sox 2008 class to reach the major leagues, joining Gordon Beckham.
With the moves, the White Sox active roster is at 30 players, and the 40-man roster increases by one to 40.
