Disney element adds new look to Fun Land
All that screaming from Family Fun Land probably won't be coming from the reptile show this year.
Organizers anticipate the appearance of the Disney Road Crew and "The Wizards of Waverly Place" stars Jennifer Stone, who plays Harper Finkle, and David Henrie, who plays Justin Russo, to elicit shrieks and maybe even some tears of joy.
"We're going to have girls screaming and crying in the front row, 'Oh my god. Oh my god,'" said Eric Sunila, who oversees Family Fun Land and special events for the Naperville Jaycees' annual Last Fling celebration in downtown Naperville. "We're hoping that it's just shy of chaos."
In Family Fun Land's second year at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., organizers intend to go big - huge, even - with free performances, crafts, inflatables, a craft tent, a chalk wall, a hay hunt and pony and tortoise rides.
"Last year we took a big jump, this year we took an even bigger jump," Sunila said.
The Disney Road Crew will perform on the Entertainment Stage at Naper Settlement from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, and on the Main Stage at nearby Rotary Hill on Monday.
Stone and Henrie will speak at the Entertainment Stage on Sunday, then meet fans from 3 to 5 p.m.
Sunila expects fans will begin lining up at 6 a.m. to get wristbands that would allow them to meet the Disney stars. The Naper Settlement gates open at 10 a.m.
"We'll probably pack the settlement with people," Sunila said. "We're distributing 1,000 wristbands for the signing."
He anticipates 2,500 people will gather just for the signing. People who receive wristbands are ensured a place in line but not guaranteed an autograph or picture.
In addition to the Disney elements, the Entertainment Stage will offer free shows all day Saturday and Sunday that include an interactive reptile show, an interactive family show, karate and martial arts demonstrations, dance competitions and performances and more.
The event is largely free, with the exception of $4 pony rides, $3 tortoise rides and $3 train rides available 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Free hay hunts take place both days at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
"Our Family Fun Land is growing and we expect a big crowd there," said Kevin Piket, co-executive director of Last Fling. "We've been getting a lot of calls."
