Police say man shot daughter accidentally

SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Police say they arrested a 55-year-old man after he allegedly shot his 9-year-old daughter in the head by accident.

Springfield Police Lt. Bill Neale said Tuesday the girl was taken to a Peoria hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The father was arrested Monday evening near his house, where the shooting took place.

Neale says the arrested man may be charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated battery, reckless conduct and aggravated domestic battery.

Officers say the man was actually aiming his gun at the victim's aunt during a domestic dispute.

The aunt was also arrested.
