Cubs add 3 to roster
As expected, the Cubs activated infielder Andres Blanco from the disabled list and recalled right-handed pitcher Justin Berg and infielder/outfielder Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A Iowa.
All three players will be available for tonight's game against the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field.
Blanco, 25, is batting .237 (22-for-93) with 5 doubles, 1 home run and 9 RBI with the Cubs this season. He was sidelined with a strained left calf on Aug. 4.
Overall this season, Blanco batted .304 (70-for-230) with 17 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 29 RBI and a .353 on-base percentage in 64 games with Iowa. The switch-hitter completed a 20-game Triple-A rehab assignment on Monday, during which he hit .280 (21-for-75) with 8 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 4RBI.
Hoffpauir, 29, was a member of Chicago's Opening Day roster and batted .233 (42-for-180) with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs and 25 RBI in 81 games with the Cubs this season. He has seen action at first base (20 games, 14 starts), left field (five games, three starts) and right field (19 games, 18 starts) this season.
Optioned to Iowa on Aug. 7, Hoffpauir batted .217 (18-for-83) with 4 doubles, 3 home runs and 13 RBI in 23 Triple-A contests leading to today's recall.
Berg, 25, joins the Cubs for his third big league stint this season. With Iowa, Berg went 6-2 with a 2.43 ERA (15 ER/55.2 IP) in 37 relief appearances this season. He limited opponents to a .205 batting average, including a .180 mark by right-handed hitters. Berg went 5-1 with a 1.96 ERA (10 ER/46.0 IP) in his final 29 Triple-A appearances since the start of June, allowing only 27 hits in 46.0 innings in that span.
