Concert brings in more than $50,000 for Parkinson's research

Despite Saturday night's unseasonably cool temperatures, more than 1,200 people came out to the Concert for a Cure fundraiser at Tanna Farms Golf Club.

That translated into more than $50,000 for the Paul Ruby Foundation, which uses the money to support research into Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system.

Money was still be accounted for late Monday, and organizers hadn't finished counting the proceeds. Besides the concerts, food sales, raffle and auctions, people just gave him checks. Children got in on the spirit: Some 8-year-old boys found golf balls in prairie areas on the course and resold them, and some girls made jewelry and sold it at the concert, handing over a plastic bag of money to Ruby.

"This is a wonderful community," said Ruby, who has Parkinson's.

The third annual concert, featuring 10 bands, raised money for the Movement and Disorders Clinic at Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Ruby, a Geneva resident, is the general manager of the Herrington Inn in Geneva.

Last year's event raised more than $50,000.
