Driver charged after car chase from Rosemont

Rosemont police have charged a Chicago man following a vehicle chase all the way to Grand and Oak Park avenues in the city Friday afternoon.

Renwick Smith, 35, of 3600 block of Flournoy Street, was charged with one count of fleeing and eluding and one count of criminal trespass to vehicle.

The passenger in Smith's vehicle was not charged, Rosemont police Sgt. Keith Kania said Monday.

Police received a call at 1 p.m. Friday of a suspicious blue Chrysler PT Cruiser pulling in and out of parking spaces at a restaurant on the 9400 block of Higgins Road in Rosemont.

The caller reported that when the restaurant proprietor went outside, the suspicious vehicle sped away onto Higgins Road.

A patrol unit spotted a vehicle fitting the description leaving the lot of another restaurant on the 9600 block of Higgins Road.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which instead accelerated away. A pursuit ensued which ended when the vehicle disobeyed a traffic signal at Grand and Oak Park avenues and struck another vehicle in the intersection.

No occupants from either vehicle were injured. Police from Norridge and Chicago assisted Rosemont officers in taking the occupants of the fleeing vehicle into custody.

Rosemont police said property stolen from a vehicle parked at one of the restaurants on Higgins Road was found in the PT Cruiser.

Smith's bond was set at $10,000 Monday. His next court date is Sept. 21.
