They were a little fidgety and kind of noisy. They never got the message to be quiet in church.

Lucky was barking at Daisy. Rocky was whining at Jake. Godiva just couldn't sit still.

But, what do you expect when 20 dogs and three cats show up to service.

The Millburn Congregational United Church of Christ, held its first-ever "Blessing of the Pets" under clear skies and cool breezes in Millburn Sunday afternoon. Dozens of critters received prayers of protection and blessing from the hand of Rev. Jed Watson.

"We affirm that we are not the only creatures on the planet," Watson said. "God has created a wide spectrum of life of which we are just one part. This is a way to affirm our response and gratitude for all of God's creatures."

The idea for the blessing came from church members Alison and John Storaasli. The Ingleside couple have attended similar services at other churches and asked Rev. Watson to consider having one.

Alison said the thought came to her as the congregation was singing a"All Things Bright and Beautiful" during a service a couple of months ago.

"I was like 'Ding!' We should have a pet blessing," she said.

Watson agreed. "Pet blessings have become increasingly popular," he said. "Animals make our lives richer from their presence."

The graces weren't limited to just cats and dogs. Some parishioners brought photos of their snakes, lizards and even hermit crabs.

Amy Lechman said her family gets to attend church every week. It was about time for the four-legged member of the Gurnee clan to visit.

"Godiva is part of our family. If we get to come to church, she should too," Lechman said smiling.

Watson made a point to lay his hand on each of the animals as he prayed. Announcing them by name, he prayed. "May the power of this blessing from Christ fill you with life, bind you to your human partners and lead you to praise your creator."

Watson hopes to make this an annual event.

"We weren't sure how many would show up today. We really had a great turnout," he said.
