Bobbits, Pirates handle Scouts
Cody Bobbit came up with a big-time offensive performance, and the defense was good when it had to be.
Combined, the Pirates (1-0) avenged last year's loss to Lake Forest with a 38-31 thriller in Palatine.
Bobbit scored 2 rushing touchdowns of 20 and 15 yards to garner 84 yards in 18 attempts. Bobbit completed 16 of 28 passes for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns in the nonconference win.
"This was a true team effort," Bobbit said. " It was an exciting game. To play the game with my two brothers (Chad and Jesse) was just great. When we had to come up with those 2 first downs to finish the game and keep the ball away from them was clutch."
Lake Forest (0-1) was its own worst enemy, comitting 5 turnovers including 4 interceptions by the Notre Dame-bound Thomas Rees. He finished 16 for 34 for 134 yards with 1 passing and 1 rushing touchdown.
The Scouts led 17-7 in the second quarter on on 2 touchdowns by T.J. Jackson, and a 28-yard field goal by Andrew O'Neill.
Jackson finished with 251 rushing yards in 19 attempts.
Bobbit conected on a 16-yard TD pass to Dan Haze to cut the lead to 17-14 with 4:04 left in the half.
Haze then recovered a fumble at the Lake Forest 31 following the kickoff.
Bobbit put Palatine ahead for good on a 20-yard run with 3:00 left in the half. Mike Luschen followed with a 40-yard field goal as the half ended for a 24-17 lead.
"You can't commit 5 turnovers and win," said Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli. "They turned 3 of those turnovers into scores."
"I was proud of the defense," said Palatine coach Tyler Donnelly. "They came up with some big plays when they needed to. Cody had a excellent game and I give credit to the players. They prepared real well for this game."
