Raise money for Honor Flight:
A fundraiser benefiting Honor Flight Chicago takes place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. The not-for-profit group arranges free trips to Washington, D.C., for World War II veterans to see their memorial. Several veterans will be in attendance. The fundraiser is a '50s sock-hop theme with costumes, contests and raffles. Cost is $15. Call (847) 358-9150.
Take tour of Deer Grove East:
Cook County Forest Preserve District Chief Ecologist Wayne Vanderploeg will lead a free tour of Deer Grove East Forest Preserve 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 30. The preserve is slated to undergo a 150-acre, five-year restoration, and Vanderploeg will discuss the history, significance and wildlife of the site and the restoration work. The tour will meet near the flying field off the main parking lot. Take the entrance north of Dundee Road about one-quarter mile west of Hicks Road and take a right when the drive forks. Holocaust Museum tour:
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois will present a docent-led tour of the Illinois Holocaust Museum, 9600 Woods Drive, Skokie, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. The cost is $10 adults; $8 seniors over 65. Space limited and reservations required by emailing rsvp@jgsi.org or calling (312) 666-0100.
Arlington Artists on Display:
The annual Arlington Artists on Display is up and runs through Nov. 22 at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum's Heritage Gallery, 112 W. Fremont St. Forty-nine artists working in many different media are in the eighth annual display. The gallery is open 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is free, but $2 donation is suggested.
