Peavy could make debut next week vs. Red Sox

The White Sox headed out of Boston Thursday night with new starting pitcher Jake Peavy still on the disabled list.

When the White Sox return to U.S. Cellular Field next Friday to open another four-game series against the Red Sox, Peavy could be ready to make his debut.

Peavy on Thursday told reporters in Boston he's aiming for one more rehab start with Class AAA Charlotte, on Saturday.

After doing some light throwing at Fenway Park, the 28-year-old right-hander said his sore right elbow was feeling better. Pitching for Charlotte on Monday, Peavy took a line drive off the elbow.

"I've obviously got a little elbow swelling but nothing major," Peavy said. "I didn't go from pain (Wednesday) to pain-free today, but it's manageable."

Peavy said he hopes to "pitch 5 or 6 innings and throw 100 pitches or so" for Charlotte on Saturday.

There was some speculation Peavy would start for the White Sox in next Thursday's makeup game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, but he's been on the disabled list since early June with a right ankle injury, and general manager Kenny Williams has already said he doesn't want the prized starter taking any risks running the bases.

That's why pitching against the Red Sox the next day seems more likely.

"We'll see what happens," Peavy said.

New digs: New York has the best home record (42-20) in baseball, but White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is looking forward to seeing new Yankee Stadium this weekend.

"A lot of people are," Guillen told reporters. "I hear a lot of great things about it. I hear a lot of negative things. (Detroit manager) Jim Leyland said, 'You will be shocked when you see how small the ballpark is in right field.' But that plays for both teams."

On tap: The White Sox' offense finally broke out against the Red Sox on Thursday, but CC Sabathia starts for the Yankees tonight in the opener of a three-game series.

Sabathia is a career 15-4 in 27 starts against the White Sox. He's also 6-0 lifetime against Mark Buehrle, his mound opponent tonight.
