Kane cops make large cocaine bust in Aurora

The Kane County Sheriff's office seized a cache of guns and more than a kilogram of cocaine this week in Aurora, police said Thursday.

The drugs, valued at $100,000 on the street, were discovered in the execution of a search warrant Tuesday at the home of suspected drug dealer Jose M. Rodriguez, 27, of the 800 block of Hammond Avenue, police said.

Rodriguez was arrested at the scene and charged with cocaine possession with the intent to deliver, armed violence and possession of a controlled substance.

Among the weapons seized were a loaded Taurus .357 revolver, a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol and an SKS assault rifle, police said.

In addition to the cocaine, Rodriguez is accused of possessing 16 grams of hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms and about a half pound of marijuana.

The sheriff's Special Operations Unit, which led the investigation, said it called in the Kane County SWAT Team to carry out the search "due to the potential violence" with so many weapons nearby.

Officials at the sheriff's office, which has struggled with recent county budget cuts, said they coordinated the search to happen on a scheduled SWAT training day to help cut costs.

Rodriguez was being held on $1 million bond Thursday at the Kane County jail in St. Charles. He's due in court Sept. 4.
