Buffalo Grove chamber rewards four with scholarships
The Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce recently presented scholarships to three area high school graduates and a chamber member employee who is returning to school.
Traditional scholarships
• Shana Manning is a 2009 graduate of Stevenson High School and plans to major in Kinesiology/Sports Medicine. At Stevenson, Shana was captain of the state champion Girls Gymnastics team, played on the soccer team for four years where she was Captain, was a member of the National Honor Society, a Varsity Scholar and a facilitator at the North Suburban Leadership Conference. Shana has volunteered as a trainer for Special Olympics Gymnasts, helped to establish a Buddy Soccer program in Buffalo Grove, and assisted at soccer tournaments and the Relay for Life.
• Cory Racusen is a 2009 graduate of Stevenson High School and will attend Eastern Illinois University where he plans to major in Recreation Administration. During high school, Cory was a member of the PE Leadership Program, a member of Boys of Stevenson Spirit, on the Class Board and participated in the G.I.V.E. Program. Cory is a camp counselor for the Buffalo Grove Park District and volunteers with the Buddy Baseball program, at homeless shelters and he spends time with senior citizens. He has also worked part-time at Pac Sun.
Nontraditional scholarship
• Vicki Kirksey works in the business office at the Indian Trails Public Library District and provides assistance with the Library foundation. Vicki plans to pursue a master's in Library Science and would eventually like to be a library director and teach library science classes.
Art scholarship
• Autumn Tahara-Eckl is a 2009 graduate of Stevenson High School and plans to major in Illustration. At Stevenson, Autumn has been a member of the Art Club, the Origami Club, has had her work published twice in Stevenson's InWit Magazine and has had her art shown at the Hyman & Miriam Reiner Art Gallery at the Buffalo Grove Fitness Center and in the Lisa Show at the Great Frame-up, where she won a first place.
