Man uses stick to rob bank in South Elgin
Perhaps a 51-year-old Lake in the Hills man took the term "stick up" too literally.
Joseph G. Dolgach, of the 0-99 block of Westminster Drive, was charged Thursday with robbing a South Elgin bank using a wooden stick as his primary - and only - weapon, court documents state.
If convicted, Dolgach faces up to 20 years in prison.
According to court documents:
Dolgach walked into the AmCore Bank, 536 Randall Road, at about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday with "some type of wooden stick or club" and told an employee in the lobby, "I want money, fast. Fast. I want money," court documents state. Two tellers put $1,918 into Dolgach's bag and then he demanded a third teller hand over the teller's car keys.
After leaving the bank, South Elgin police said, Dolgach tried to steal a vehicle from a passing motorist, but the motorist fought off the attack.
Dolgach ran away but was caught by a South Elgin police sergeant at the nearby Dunkin Donuts on an unrelated matter, court documents and officials said.
South Elgin police said Dolgach was due in court Friday morning to have his bond set in federal court.
A messages left at the courthouse were not immediately returned. FBI officials in Chicago were not available Thursday for additional comment beyond court documents.
