Fire damages Carol Stream house

Carol Stream Fire Protection District officials still are trying to determine what caused a Wednesday afternoon house fire that caused more than $200,000 damage.

Authorities said the owner of the house at 1165 Robin Court came home about 2:45 p.m. and was met with thick black smoke when he opened a door. The owner went to a neighbor's house to call for help.

The first firefighters on the scene found black smoke coming through the front door and began suppression efforts while searching the home for occupants. The owner told firefighters no one was inside at the time.

The fire was brought under control about an hour later, authorities said. Firefighters from Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Winfield, Glenside and Hanover Park assisted. No injuries were reported.

Investigators remained on the scene Wednesday evening in an effort to determine what sparked the blaze. Don Lay, the district's public information officer, said investigators still were uncertain where in the house the fire began.

Lay said the house was deemed uninhabitable and the residents, who have family in the area, were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
