Tony Bennett to perform twice at Ravinia
Not to sound a morbid note, but even as Tony Bennett returns again to Ravinia you never know when it could be your last chance to see him. His voice has seemed more and more ragged on recent TV appearances, but a chance to hear him sing "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" in the flesh is still a chance to catch one of the true greats.
Tony Bennett plays at 8 p.m. today and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 and 29, at Ravinia, Lake-Cook and Green Bay roads, Highland Park. Seats are $91, lawn tickets $23 ($5 more the day of the show) available by calling (847) 266-5100 or visiting ravinia.org.
Parrothead pandemonium
Jimmy Buffett tours almost as much as Tony Bennett - almost - and shows no signs of slowing down with his Coral Reefer Band. Loyal Parrotheads are ordered to cross the border for a raid into Wisconsin this weekend.
Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band plays at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Alpine Valley Music Theater, 2699 Highway D, East Troy, Wis. Seats are $127.50, lawn tickets $27.50, sold out, but no doubt available online.
'Tiger' in the night
Nellie "Tiger" Travis has the traditional blues background. A Mississippi native, she found her way to Chicago to pursue a career in electric blues. Now she's out to fill the vacuum left by the death of Koko Taylor. She brings her band to Mount Prospect this weekend, where she's sure to include material from her latest album, "I'm a Woman" (as if there were any doubt). Her songs include "I Saw it on Oprah" and "Slap Yo' Weave Off," so she has a sense of humor, too.
Nellie "Tiger" Travis and the Men in Black play at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29., at Blues Bar, 2 W. Busse Ave., Mount Prospect. Call (847) 788-9977 or visit blues-bar.com for details.
