Rockford police kill man near day care center

ROCKFORD -- Rockford police say officers have shot and killed a 23-year-old man at a downtown building housing a church and day care.

Rockford Police Chief Chet Epperson says school was in session at House of Grace Daycare and Preschool when the shooting occurred shortly after noon Monday, but no children or staff members were injured.

Epperson said officers were searching for a man wanted in a domestic dispute Sunday night. He said that when they spotted a man fitting the description, he ran into the Kingdom Authority International Ministries Church.

Epperson said the man struggled with the officers and grabbed one of their guns, so another officer shot him.

The dead man's identity was not released Monday evening.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
